As heard on NPR: Shipping companies are putting sails back on cargo ships

NPR spoke with Ingrid Irigoyen, founder of ZEMBA, about the state of shipping decarbonization

NPR’s Henry Larson spoke with Ingrid Irigoyen, Managing Director of the Center for Green Market Activation and founder of ZEMBA, about the state of shipping decarbonization as wind propulsion returns to cargo vessels.

“Every single one of us can just look around your house right now and go every single thing pretty much came on a ship. So it’s a huge scale. And the challenges — we’ve got a big mountain to climb.”
— Ingrid Irigoyen

ZEMBA’s demand aggregation model is designed to answer that challenge by pooling commitments from freight buyers, which gives fuel producers and shipowners the confidence to invest. For complex, global sectors like maritime, there are many available pathways to drive down emissions, including exciting new technologies like Anemoi’s rotor sails and innovative procurement approaches like ZEMBA.
